The Four Factors That Set an Original Painting's Price
1. Size
The most straightforward factor. Larger paintings take more time, more materials, and more skill to execute well. A 6×6 inch original and a 24×30 inch original are not the same amount of work, even from the same artist.
2. Time invested
A painting that took 4 hours is priced differently from one that took 40 hours. Technique complexity matters here — a painting with intricate dimensional texture built up in multiple layers takes significantly longer than a flat painting of the same size.

How to Know If a Price Is Fair
Ask these questions:
Is it actually original? One of a kind, made by hand, not a reproduction. If the artist sells "original paintings" in editions of 50, those are prints.
What is the size? Price per square inch is a useful rough comparison across similar artists and techniques.
How long did it take? An artist who can explain their process and time investment is pricing honestly. Vague answers about "the creative process" are a red flag.
Is there gallery markup? Buying direct from the artist removes 40–50% of the price that would otherwise go to a gallery.
