Jay is a BFA graduate of Bowling Green State University who returned to Akron, Ohio and built something no one else had: a body of work defined by a technique he invented himself. He calls it caulk art — and it's exactly what it sounds like.
Before any paint touches the canvas, Jay uses flexible caulk — the same material used to seal bathtubs and windows — to sculpt real three-dimensional texture. Ridges. Peaks. Valleys. The caulk dries hard, and then the painting begins on top of a landscape that already has physical depth. The result is paintings that look alive from across the room and feel almost sculptural up close.
